In the absence of rain so desperately needed, anglers once again had to rely on the next best thing: a strong, consistent wind. Fortunately, it proved to be a worthy substitute for parts of the week and played a crucial role in the eight fish that were landed.
With the exception of Friday, when bright sunshine largely cancelled out any advantage the wind had offered, fish were landed on every day of the week. It serves as another timely reminder that even in challenging low-water conditions, there is always an opportunity for those prepared to make the most of favourable circumstances.
Looking ahead, the forecast offers a glimmer of encouragement, with showers predicted on most days throughout the coming week. While the prospect of any substantial rainfall still appears unlikely, even a modest rise in water levels would be welcomed by both anglers and fish alike. As is so often the case with salmon fishing, optimism remains essential—and, for now at least, we continue to live in hope.
Sunday 26th July 2026The settled spell of bright, hot weather continued throughout much of the week, accelerating the decline in river levels, which have now fallen below -2". Unsurprisingly, these conditions had a significant impact on sport, with both the low water and rising water temperatures making life increasingly difficult for anglers.
As temperatures climbed through the middle of the week, many anglers quite sensibly chose to spend their time enjoying activities better suited to the weather. This proved beneficial not only for themselves but also for the welfare of the fish during what were becoming increasingly challenging conditions.
A welcome change arrived over the weekend as cooler temperatures, cloud cover and a fresh breeze brought a noticeable improvement. While conditions remained far from ideal, they were sufficient to stimulate a little activity, preventing what had looked set to be a blank week. Four fish were landed on Saturday, providing a timely reminder that there are still fish willing to cooperate when conditions become favourable.
Looking ahead, the forecast offers little encouragement in terms of rainfall, and river levels are expected to continue falling. As a result, success is likely to depend even more heavily on the presence of a favourable breeze coupled with cloud cover. Anglers planning to fish in the coming week would be well advised to make the most of the early mornings and late evenings.
Sunday 19th July 2026The week on the river was very much a tale of two halves, with a dramatic change in weather conditions having a significant impact on both river levels and sport.
Rain at the beginning of the week provided a welcome lift in the water height, raising levels to a little over a foot. Combined with cool, overcast conditions, it created good conditions, and anglers enjoyed some of the best sport of the season so far. Monday and Tuesday accounted for the lion's share of the week's success, with 20 salmon landed during the opening two days.
From Wednesday onwards, however, the arrival of bright sunshine brought an abrupt change in fortunes. As temperatures climbed and the river began to fall away, the fish became increasingly reluctant to cooperate. Thursday proved particularly challenging, with wall-to-wall sunshine and exceptionally high air temperatures resulting in the only blank day of the week.
Despite the difficult conditions in the second half of the week, perseverance was rewarded, and by Saturday evening the weekly tally stood at 35 salmon landed.
Looking ahead, the forecast offers little encouragement for anglers, with continued warm, settled weather expected. Those planning to fish next week are likely to find the greatest success during the cooler early morning and late evening periods. As water levels continue to fall, downsizing tackle and adopting a more delicate approach should help maximise opportunities until more favourable conditions return.
Sunday 12th July 2026The river continued to benefit from the tail end of the previous week's welcome rise in water levels, and anglers began the week with plenty of optimism. Those encouraging conditions were reflected on the river, with action experienced across the beats and a few fish landed during the opening days.
Unfortunately, the weather soon became the dominant factor. Conditions changed dramatically as the week progressed, swinging from gale-force winds to hot, bright days accompanied by a complete lack of wind. As a result, the fishing suffered.
Despite the unsettled weather, a few anglers continued to find success, although opportunities became less frequent than they had been at the start of the week. By the close of play, a total of eight salmon had been landed.
Sunday 5th July 2026The week began with the river continuing to run at very low levels, and sitting below zero on the gauge. Despite the challenging conditions, small runs of fresh fish had entered the system in the preceding days, and anglers enjoyed some encouraging action on Monday morning. Unfortunately, while several fish showed interest, none were successfully landed – although some were very close!
The hot, bright weather that followed, while not reaching the extreme temperatures experienced further south, did little to improve prospects. With little water and plenty of sunshine, conditions remained difficult for both fish and anglers alike.
A welcome change arrived overnight on Thursday into Friday, when thunderstorms brought a sharp rise in river levels and transformed conditions for the final two days of the week. As is often the case, Friday proved something of a transition day as the coloured water gradually cleared and settled, with the fish perhaps needing time to adjust.
Saturday, however, saw much more favourable water conditions, although the return of bright sunshine was far from ideal. Even so, anglers had some limited sport, landing eight salmon over the course of the final two days of the week.
As is so often the case following a thunderstorm, the fresh water has been running away almost as quickly as it arrived, with river levels already dropping rapidly. With showers forecast during the coming week, everyone will be hoping they deliver enough rain to maintain some much-needed water and encourage further runs of fresh fish into the system.
Sunday 28th June 2026The week began with water levels sitting just on the positive side of zero, but with no rainfall to replenish the river, levels gradually declined as the week progressed. By Thursday, the gauge read below zero, creating increasingly challenging conditions for anglers.
Given the falling water, it was little surprise that the majority of the week's action came during the first half of the week. By the close of play, a total of five salmon had been landed.
Despite the lack of rain, it was encouraging to see that the larger tides early in the week appeared to bring a few more fresh fish into the system, and perhaps even more encouraging was the fact that fresh fish continued to enter the river over the weekend, despite the tides easing away in size.
Sunday 21st June 2026Fishing conditions on the river over the past week were generally favourable, with only a few occasions when bright sunshine became a hindrance. River levels have continued to be supported by water from the dam, which remains fresh after last week's rainfall, keeping the river above zero. The strong winds experienced on Friday and Saturday were welcomed; however, with the airflow predominantly from the west, a number of pools failed to receive the ripple that anglers would have hoped for, leaving some of the river fishing less effective than expected.
Action was again limited this week, with anglers reporting offers and follows, while a handful of fish were briefly connected. The week's sole success came in the form of a single fish landed. While numbers were disappointing, the fish compensated in quality, proving to be a large salmon and a fitting reward for perseverance on the river.
Sunday 14th June 2026After recent seasons of fluctuating conditions, this week’s anglers arrived on the river on Monday morning to the unusual sight of what appeared to be near-perfect water conditions. Expectations were understandably high, with good water levels, favourable overhead conditions, and every reason to believe the fish would respond.
Unfortunately, the week proved challenging, with fish proving difficult to locate and even harder to tempt. Effort remained steady throughout the beats, but catches never quite matched the optimism generated by the conditions.
By the end of the week, a total of 12 salmon had been landed. Continuing the pattern seen recently, many fish reported were impressive specimens, with several weighing well into the heavy teens. These powerful fish provided memorable sport for the fortunate anglers who connected with them.
It was encouraging to see the first grilse of the season landed.
Sunday 7th June 2026The week began with at least a little interest from fish on Monday morning, but as the increasingly hot and sunny conditions persisted throughout the week, activity steadily declined, and anglers found action hard to come by. Thankfully, a welcome change in the weather on Saturday breathed a little life back into the river and resulted in a single entry in the book for the week.
The rainfall received over the past 48 hours is certainly encouraging, and with a more changeable forecast ahead, prospects are more promising for next week's anglers.
Sunday 31st May 2026With a very useful overnight rise in water, anglers were greeted with good conditions on Monday morning, and hopes were high, especially given the encouraging results from the previous week. However, the fish failed to respond in the manner that we hoped, and anglers had to work hard for results. The final total of 6 fish could certainly have been greater, with a large number of lost fish throughout the week.
There continues to be differing weather forecasts for the week ahead, some predicting bright sun and high temperatures. Should this be the case, the fishing will not become any easier next week.
Sunday 24th May 2026Despite low water at the start of the week, Monday morning kicked off well, particularly for one angler who enjoyed remarkable sport by landing two superb fish in under an hour.
As the week progressed, unsettled weather brought light but persistent showers, helping the river gradually edge upwards. These improving conditions certainly helped, as a couple of fish were caught over the following days.
Towards the end of the week, heavier rain falling in the right areas provided the river with a more significant lift and greatly improved prospects. Those anglers who found themselves favourably placed and able to make the most of the wind conditions enjoyed some very good sport, helping the weekly total reach 13 fish.
Monday 18th May 2026For the week commencing 4th May, a small rise of a couple of inches at the start of the week helped to steady conditions and slow the rate at which water levels were dropping. However, despite this brief lift, the river continued to fall and eventually dropped back below zero during the second half of the week.
As anyone familiar with the Halladale will know, a fresh breeze can often make all the difference during low water, but unfortunately, winds were light for most of the week, leaving conditions far from ideal. As a result, sport was fairly limited. However, perseverance was rewarded with 2 fantastic, fresh fish landed, as well as several additional offers, confirming that there are still fish moving through the system despite the difficult conditions.
Sunday 10th May 2026The north enjoyed an unseasonably bright and hot spell throughout the week, with conditions feeling more akin to mid-summer than late April. As a result, river levels continued to drop rapidly, falling well below zero on the gauge. Coupled with long periods of calm, windless weather, anglers faced particularly challenging fishing conditions.
Coinciding with the best of the fishing weather, there were limited reports of interest from fish early in the week, offering a hint of promise. However, as the days progressed and the sun took hold, activity became increasingly limited.
A welcome shift arrived on Saturday, with a return to more typical, seasonable weather. This brought a modest lift in spirits, and rods again encountered a couple of tentative shows of interest from fish. Despite these brief moments of encouragement, the week ultimately remained fishless.
On a positive note, fish continue to be observed entering the river, which bodes well for the days ahead. While the forecast currently offers little in the way of rainfall, cooler temperatures and more favourable overhead conditions should provide improved prospects for anglers in the coming week, especially for those willing to venture out both early and late.
Sunday 3rd May 2026The past week on the river unfolded very much in line with expectations, with the most favourable conditions to be found during the first half of the week. Water and overall weather conditions, including a small rise in river levels, created the best fishing opportunities — and it was during this window that the vast majority of the action took place. There was a noticeable increase in activity, with interest from fish throughout the beats. Not only were more fish seen, but several were also encountered, keeping the rods encouraged.
A special mention must go to husband and wife team, Glyn and Lesley Phillips, who enjoyed a great week. Between them, they experienced the full spectrum of salmon fishing — raising, losing, and ultimately landing fish. It perfectly illustrated just how much of a rollercoaster this sport can be.
Lesley, in particular, had a week to remember. Early on, she hooked into a large fish and played it expertly, only for it to slip away agonisingly close to the net. It was a tough moment, but perseverance paid off, and after several days of bright and brassy overhead conditions which all but brought fishing to a halt, she was rewarded with another chance on Saturday, this time landing a beautiful, fresh 12lb fish that more than made up for the earlier disappointment.
Sunday 26th April 2026The past week brought a mixed bag of conditions on the river, resulting in both encouragement and frustration in equal measure.
Water levels at the start of the week remained favourable, higher than some anglers had become accustomed to in recent seasons. However, these conditions were paired at times with bright, overhead skies, and with no meaningful rainfall through the week, levels gradually dropped away. On a more positive note, the increasing spring tides built as the week progressed and often help to encourage fresh fish into the system.
Although fish are present, there was no action until midweek when one angler came agonisingly close to getting off the mark—only to lose the fish within a few feet after briefly bringing it into view. Thankfully, perseverance paid off as the week drew to a close, and on Saturday, Mike Sanders landed a beautiful, fresh fish of around 10lb, a well-earned reward and a timely reminder that sticking at it can make all the difference.
Looking towards the week ahead, the forecast suggests that conditions may be challenging at times, with the best prospects likely to be at the start of the week.
Sunday 19th April 2026The week on the river began with the water running high - truth be told, a bit too high for ideal fishing conditions. Levels see-sawed through the early part of the week, making things challenging for anglers out on the water.
It wasn’t until Wednesday that things began to settle, and with improving conditions came the highlight of the week. David Lipp landed a cracking fresh fish of 10lb, which was a welcome reward after the unsettled start. There were also reports of another brief but encouraging encounter further upstream, suggesting a few fish were on the move.
Although the river levels tailed off nicely, and conditions were reasonable for the remainder of the week, there was unfortunately no further action to report. That said, the signs are positive with fish clearly present in the system, and with another lift in water levels yesterday, prospects are shaping up nicely for the week ahead.
All in all, while catches were limited, there’s every reason for optimism for anglers fishing next week.
Sunday 12th April 2026Fishing effort on the river remained very light over the past week, with little to report until the tail end, and it wasn’t until Thursday and Friday that rods ventured out to test the conditions. While no fish were landed, there was at least a glimmer of encouragement with one of the rods reporting some interest on Friday afternoon, suggesting there are fish about and always hope.
The weather certainly played its part in keeping effort low. Conditions were, at times, far from spring-like, with a mix of rain and even snow over the weekend. This led to the river levels fluctuating throughout the week, never quite settling into a consistent height.
Looking ahead, there’s reason for next week’s anglers to be optimistic. A more settled spell of weather is forecast, which should bring steadier water levels and more favourable fishing conditions.
Sunday 5th April 2026Coverage across the river stepped up a notch during the past week, with more anglers present—though it would still be fair to say that overall rod effort remained modest. Weather conditions proved challenging at times, with strong winds dominating much of the week and reaching gale force more than occasionally. However, these systems brought some welcome rain in the latter half of the week, lifting water levels to a far more favourable height for fishing.
The highlight of the week came on Tuesday, when newcomer Charles Napier enjoyed a memorable introduction to the Halladale. Fishing well, Charles connected with a beautifully fresh 12lb salmon. Showing patience and composure, he followed textbook procedure as the fish came to the fly multiple times—before finally committing on the third occasion and hammering the fly. A fine fish and a moment to savour on any river, let alone on a first visit.
Encouragingly, another fish was also hooked and lost, adding to the sense that fish are moving through the system and offering optimism for the days ahead. With water levels now in good order and fish clearly present, prospects are looking increasingly positive as we move into the coming week.
Sunday 29th March 2026As we move further into March, it is encouraging to see anglers now beginning to arrive for the season, bringing a renewed sense of anticipation. While the river was fished over the past week, overall rod effort remained low.
Conditions were at their most favourable during the early part of the week, with higher water levels offering the best opportunity for sport. Any reported activity was confined to this period, as the water gradually tailed away in the latter half of the week.
Despite this, it has been an enjoyable time to be on the river, with longer days and more than a hint of spring in the air, even when the fish proved elusive.
Looking ahead, the forecast suggests a return to more wintery conditions, with colder temperatures and strong winds expected to be felt. While some rain is predicted, it remains to be seen how much will materialise and what effect it may have on the river.
Monday 23rd March 2026It’s come as quite a relief to feel winter loosening its grip over recent weeks and to finally look ahead to what we hope will be a productive and memorable 2026 season on the Halladale.
I’m delighted to report that the first salmon of the year was landed on 21st February by Lesley Phillips, who brought a superb 8lb fish to the net from Upper Ashills — and remarkably, it came on her very last cast of the day! Even more notably, this is the first February salmon recorded on the Halladale since 2014, making Lesley’s catch all the more special and a fantastic way to open the season.
Congratulations to Lesley on a fine early-season fish and a well-deserved reward for perseverance.

Sunday 22nd February 2026The season drew to a rather uneventful close this week, with low water and bright overhead conditions hampering prospects and resulting in a further 9 fish to add to the season tally.
Like many rivers across the north, the lack of rain has been a major issue throughout the year and the fact that the river has been without a full spate since late March is unprecedented. Of course, the irony is that, with the season closed, “real” rain has finally arrived, and the river levels are rocketing. On a positive note, at least this will allow fish access to the upper reaches of the catchment in preparation for spawning next month.
As always, a special note of thanks and acknowledgement is expressed to all anglers who visited the Halladale during the season and, despite some pretty unfavourable conditions, enjoyed the river for the magical place it is.
Friday 3rd October 2025Benefiting from another small rise in water last Sunday, fishing began well on the final full week of the season with 11 fish landed on Monday. Without any additional rain to keep the levels topped up, the river fell rapidly, along with catches, resulting in a weekly total of 21 fish.
With two days remaining of a season plagued by low water levels, the hope was for a deluge of rain to finish on a flurry. Once again, last night's rain appears to have fallen further to the south and west, failing to deposit any significant amount on the Halladale catchment. The weather has been consistent if nothing else.
Sunday 28th September 2025While the small rise in water on Monday lifted both the river height and anglers’ optimism, the pools became extremely dirty as the water failed to reach a sufficient level to quickly clear the dislodged weed. Another small upward tick on Tuesday helped to keep the gauge above zero until Friday, and unsurprisingly, the best of the fishing coincided with the clearer water in the middle of the week.
Sunday 21st September 2025As rivers across much of the country have enjoyed a long-overdue rise in levels, meaningful rain has cruelly continued to avoid the Halladale catchment over the past week, with less than an inch extra on the gauge.
Despite the extremely low water levels, anglers experienced periods of success throughout the week as fish became more active, resulting in a total of 10 salmon and grilse landed. Several factors contributed to this: the river had been undisturbed by fishing activity the previous week and as a result was well rested; additionally, the combination of strong, favourable winds and cooler night time temperatures helped reduce the water temperature.
Certain forecasts for the week ahead look much more unsettled, some even look promising. One thing we’ve learned from this season is not to pay too much attention to any of them.
Sunday 14th September 2025With the river levels reduced to a season low, fishing effort was confined to the “occasional rod” over the past week, with many days unfished.
Sadly, as we’ve experienced on many occasions this year, the wet weather that swept into the country from the west failed to reach the far north in any meaningful way, and the resulting wetting of the ground means the wait for rain continues.
Sunday 31st August 2025Faced with yet another week of low water and challenging overhead conditions, there is little to report from the river with only two fish landed. In truth, fishing effort was light, and there were many days when anglers chose other activities, and sensibly so. As noted on so many occasions this season, rain is now badly needed.
Sunday 24th August 2025The small rise in water on Tuesday brought the river levels back above zero and certainly helped to enable a few fish to be caught in the days that followed. Unfortunately, the overhead conditions and lack of wind became an issue as the week progressed, and the total of 8 fish landed was lower than expected.
Sunday 17th August 2025As the week began, we were eagerly awaiting the arrival of Storm Floris with the hope that she brought with her more rain than wind. In the end, neither were of huge quantities and the resulting rise, although most welcome, came from burns in the lower river. Unsurprisingly, fishing was initially slow as the turbid water conditions put the fish down and took a day to clear.
With the water falling rapidly and the strong winds always a factor, anglers didn’t have it easy but still managed to land 30 fish over the remainder of the week. Notably, this included fish landed by 5 children aged between 10 – 14, with three of them recording their first salmon.
Sunday 10th August 2025At times during the past week, there were brief occasions when, with the exception of the all-important water height, general fishing conditions appeared reasonable. Sadly, these periods were short-lived and failed to have the desired effect, with fish showing little interest apart from the occasional offer or follow.
The forecast for the week ahead looks much more changeable with gale-force winds and even some rain – we all hope that this materialises into a very much needed rise.
Sunday 3rd August 2025Frustratingly we missed out again on the localised rain at the beginning of the week, though the small rise we did have took the river back up to zero on the gauge. Though not the rise we hoped for, it was still welcome regarding fish welfare.
With low water and very light winds for the majority of the week, sensibly fishing effort was light, resulting in two fish caught.
With bigger tides in the latter part of the week, good numbers of fish were seen entering the system which can give next weeks anglers some optimism.
Sunday 27th July 2025Despite the week beginning with a fish landed first thing on Monday morning, it took until 10:00 pm on Saturday for another to be added to the book. Unfortunately, the weather and water conditions in between meant that for large periods the river was best rested.
Cooler nighttime temperatures in the second half of the week have helped bring water temperatures down, but this is still no substitute for rain, which sadly has not arrived. With the water levels now shrunk almost to the limit, light tackle combined with early and late fishing will certainly bring the best chance of success.
Sunday 20th July 2025With the gauge still reading on the positive side of zero, decent cloud and wind to match, anglers found conditions most favourable on Monday. Unfortunately, the catches didn’t correlate as a single fish was caught across the river that day. As temperatures lifted and the river levels dropped sharply, action was in short supply as the fish seemingly “switched off,” resulting in only one other fish added midweek to bring the weekly total to two.
Scorching temperatures over the weekend have now raised the water temperature to a level of concern, and fishing restrictions are likely to be put in place to ensure that fish welfare is not compromised. These measures will be discussed daily with visiting parties. In truth, faced with weather such as we’ve experienced over the past couple of days, anglers already take the sensible approach in refraining from fishing.
Sunday 13th July 2025At times over the past week, fish were active and visible in every pool, although they remained reluctant to take. Yet, on other occasions, the only indication of fish being present was when they were obliging to anglers’ offerings. The final tally of 34 fish was helped by the midweek rise that saw the river reach its highest level since March. As expected, as we slip into July, the resulting catches were dominated by grilse, with the inclusion of some larger salmon.
Sunday 6th July 2025Benefiting from the luxury of a little water during the first half of the week, anglers made the most of the conditions and enjoyed reasonable sport. As expected, it was a case of diminishing returns as the water levels fell, and the temperature rose in the second half of the week, with fish becoming increasingly less responsive. The final tally of 22 fish comprised a mixture of salmon and grilse, with a scattering of fish in the teens of pounds.
With the river now fallen below zero once again, next week’s anglers will need to adopt a stealthy and careful approach. They will at least have fresh fish to target.
Sunday 29th June 2025Last weekend’s rise in water was greatly welcomed and helped to breathe a little life back into the river. Sadly, the water levels dropped as quickly as they rose, but with the river sitting at 3 inches on Monday morning, anglers at least enjoyed a “flow” during the first couple of days. Disappointingly, by Wednesday, the gauges were once again registering below zero. Six fish were landed during the week, and with as many lost, the tally could have been greater.
The thunderstorms across the north early this morning seem to have again been fairly localised and brief, with the rivers across the region showing varying degrees of benefit so far. We will all watch in anticipation of the outcome.
Sunday 22nd June 2025Sadly, there was no significant change to the conditions and overall prospects for anglers over the past week as the river level remained below summer lows. Apart from a couple of offers at the beginning of the week, action was limited, although so too was the fishing effort. For many, the trout fishing became the main focus of their visit with some enjoyable and productive outings.
The rain promised over the weekend looked set to miss us once again with little more than a few showers on Saturday. Thankfully, more substantial rain arrived overnight and into the early hours of the morning, resulting in a rising river at the time of writing. While this may not result in a full-blown spate, it will certainly see the river in considerably better condition than we’ve seen for some time.
I fully sympathise with the departing anglers this morning as they see a flowing river for the first time during their trip, and truly hope that their next visit coincides with better conditions.
Sunday 15th June 2025Any heavy showers during the past week were sadly short-lived and failed to fall in the ‘right’ place. Consequently, the strong wind was the only element that stood in favour of anglers as the river continued to fall, and all parties once again reduced fishing effort.
Limited action was reported, though the two very welcome fish landed during the week prove that there’s always hope.
Sunday 8th June 2025We have watched in amazement over the past week as substantial rain arrived in rivers only a short journey south, but once again failed to reach the Halladale catchment. The small amount that fell here was certainly welcome, but it didn’t at any point lift the river above minus 2 inches.
Fishing effort was reduced, which is often beneficial during times of low water, as anglers picked their moments to coincide with the best of the wind and overhead conditions. The two fish landed were at either end of the week, with a scattering of offers in between.
Sunday 1st June 2025Another week of desperately challenging conditions leaves us with little to report on the salmon fishing front. On most days, the sun reduced angling effort to either early morning or late evening shifts, though this resulted in no more than a couple of ‘shows of interest’ from fish.
In the face of these difficult times, all parties have made the most of the trout fishing locally available and have had some great days of sport and, in some cases, have been reminded of the enjoyment trout fishing can bring.
Anglers will have closely followed the forecasts over the past week, all of which predicted the arrival of at least some meaningful rain over the weekend. Again, this has failed to arrive, and the river remains below zero. In our favour over the coming week will be the arrival of cloud and wind; this is at least an improvement on recent weeks.
Sunday 25th May 2025Without any change to the weather over the past week, the river and prospects have remained thin and it’s unsurprising that no fish were landed. Despite the hot and bright days, colder night time temperatures have helped to keep the water temperature in check which is crucial for fish welfare during these drought conditions.
Monday 19th May 2025As if the low water wasn’t tough enough, anglers had to deal with blazing sun at times over the past week. Sensibly, during these hot and bright days, fishing efforts were reduced and other activities were enjoyed. Rewarded for this more selective approach, 3 fish were landed during the week, with 2 caught during the cloud cover experienced on Saturday, including the first confirmed grilse of the season.
Sunday 11th May 2025With the river levels reduced to minus 3 inches at the beginning of the week, and a severe lack of wind, it was probably unsurprising that action was in very short supply across the river. Following some welcome, though certainly not substantial rain, the river rose to register on the gauge, improving both prospects and enthusiasm for anglers. Evening efforts were rewarded as three fish were landed in the second half of the week, with special mention going to James White, who landed a beautiful fish of 10lbs.
Sunday 4th May 2025The rain that had been forecast for the beginning of the week didn’t just fail to materialise, it disappeared completely leaving the river to continue to drop away to below minus 3 inches. Coupled with the bright sun, there were days when fishing effort mirrored the likelihood of success.
Encouragingly, and despite no fish being landed this week, there were several opportunities with fish lost and brief connections. The number of fish seen has also increased across the pools and entering the river, giving hope for next week’s anglers.
Given the inaccuracy of last week’s weather forecast, I’m reluctant to read too much into the forecast for the coming week. However, the certainty of the large, spring tides will be of some reassurance.
Sunday 27th April 2025It can be difficult to remain positive when faced with the conditions we have seen over the past few weeks. However, it’s times like these that perseverance is important and, at times, will pay. For Stephen Aitken, making his annual pilgrimage from Australia, it certainly did as he was rewarded for his efforts with a fantastic fish of 17lbs – well done, Steve!
The small rise in water during the week may have fallen away quickly, but it has helped conditions and means that any rain we may be lucky enough to receive now is more likely to have the desired effect.
Sunday 20th April 2025Anglers faced difficult conditions during the last week as the ongoing drought dropped the river levels below summer lows. The bright sun and lack of wind only worsened the situation and saw anglers sensibly select the best times to fish.
Wednesday 16th April 2025It’s fair to say that hopes were high following the rise of water last weekend, which saw this week’s anglers begin with favourable water conditions. Sadly, any beneficial effect the extra water had was negated by the bright overhead conditions that dominated for the duration of the week.
Sunday 6th April 2025Activity on the river has gradually increased over the past few weeks, assisted by the return of visiting anglers for the first time this season. Unfortunately, the weather has been unusually dry during the initial three months of the season, resulting in low water conditions for all the northern rivers. Despite these conditions, last week's anglers, including some newcomers, enjoyed their time on the river and nearly got the season off the mark with a fish that was ‘lost at the feet’.
Following yesterday's rain, the prospects for next week appear promising, and the lighter winds will be most welcome.
Sunday 30th March 2025With only one day of fishing this week on Monday marking the end of the season, there was hope that the fish would be as cooperative as they were the previous week to conclude the season on a high note. However, anglers had to work hard to land 10 fish, culminating in a season total of 443. The final tally casts a more favourable light on the season, with September's long-awaited rain contributing to the improved catches.
As the season concludes, expressing gratitude to the visiting parties and team members who cherish the Halladale throughout the year is crucial for their unwavering support and appreciation of this unique river. This sentiment is particularly significant for those who endured challenging conditions, which were prevalent this year. We all share the hope that for these anglers, their next visit will be blessed with an abundance of water.
Sunday 6th October 2024Having missed out on the promise of real rain on so many occasions this summer we were finally blessed this week as the rains swept in from the north and lifted the river almost daily. Enjoying the fantastic water, albeit with a northerly wind to deal with at times, anglers made the most of the conditions and landed 90 fish during the week.
Sunday 29th September 2024With the benefit of favourable conditions on Monday the week began well but soon saw diminishing returns as water levels dropped quickly and the north experienced a resurgence of intense summer weather, complete with high temperatures and bright sunshine.
Fortunately, the forecast suggests a temperature drop in the upcoming week, and we might even be fortunate enough to receive some rainfall. Should this arrive, it will be very much welcome.
Sunday 22nd September 2024An initially rising and unsettled river during the first half of the week provided the lift in water levels that anglers required, although it subdued the fish's activity. As conditions settled in the second half, fishing became more successful, culminating in a final count of 43 fish.
Sunday 15th September 2024Over the past week, the weather has displayed a true variety of conditions, ranging from the much-appreciated rain and autumnal ambience early in the week which provided the much-needed lift in water levels to the less desirable resurgence of summer in the latter half. Generally, the catches and the final weekly tally were largely influenced by the conditions and, to some extent, by the reduced effort of the rods.
Looking into next week, the forecast is more in line with the season with unsettled weather and some rain on the horizon.
Sunday 8th September 2024The conditions have continued to be unhelpful to anglers resulting in modest fishing effort and even more modest catches. Unsurprisingly, the single fish landed during the past week coincided with the only "fishing" day that rods enjoyed and could have easily resulted in a few more fish had the numerous offers stuck.
The wait for serious rain continues.
Sunday 1st September 2024Yet again, rain of any significance failed to materialise over the past week and anglers watched on as the promised bands of rain miraculously split to skirt around the north giving little more than “nuisance rain”. However, even small amounts of rain can have the desired effect as the river slowly crept in the right direction by nearly an inch. Coupled, sadly only at times, with a favourable wind in both strength and direction, 19 fish were landed throughout the week.
Sunday 25th August 2024While water has been in short supply this week, thankfully, the wind has not. Coupled with falling water temperatures, this no doubt helped as 14 fish were landed across the river with the majority of action taking place during the overcast days enjoyed towards the end of the week.
Sunday 18th August 2024With the river sitting several inches below zero at the beginning of the week, prospects looked fairly bleak for last week’s anglers. As so often is the case over the summer months and with southwesterly winds, the forecasted rain that was so desperately needed failed to fall in the desired quantity over the Halladale catchment as we had to settle for a 2-inch rise. Thankfully, this was enough to provide a little action at least as 7 fish were landed.
Sunday 11th August 2024It was noted this week that while anglers saw fish all across the river, they failed to show much interest in their offerings apart from splashing at the occasional fly. Unfortunately, there was no evidence to suggest that there had been a rise in water two weeks ago as the river had dropped to well below zero and, coupled with a severe lack of wind, fishing conditions were far from ideal.
Thankfully, at least a couple of fish were landed to save a blank week, and on a positive note fresh fish have continued to be seen entering the river.
Sunday 4th August 2024A quick rise in water levels on Sunday, which saw the river peak at 2 feet, made all the difference as 54 fish were landed during the week. With the rain concentrated on just one area of the catchment, the water dropped very quickly and by Wednesday, the river was running at 1”, meaning the best fishing was enjoyed in the first couple of days.
While next week’s anglers will not have the benefit of extra water they will hopefully find sport from the decent numbers of fresh fish that have continued to enter the system.
Sunday 28th July 2024With little in the way of meaningful rain and higher temperatures, anglers found the fish quite unresponsive for the majority of the week with 8 fish landed. With a small rise in water on Saturday and further rain forecast, anglers will hopefully enjoy more favourable conditions next week.
Saturday 20th July 2024As is so often the case in the far north, the rain forecast for the middle of the week failed to materialise into anything more than a small two-inch rise. Thankfully, this did improve the fishing briefly and contributed to the final tally of 23 fish.
Sunday 14th July 2024It was encouraging to see better numbers of fish in the river this week but, as all anglers know, that doesn't mean they will always cooperate. Even during the occasions when the fish were more responsive all too often, the connections were short-lived – sadly, that’s grilse!
Sunday 7th July 2024Following three weeks of decent water and reasonable catches the fishing slowed down during the past week as the river height dropped and the fish became less responsive. For the first time this season, grilse outnumbered salmon as 10 fish were landed with the majority of action coming in the second half of the week. Like the salmon caught so far this year, the returning grilse appear to be in fantastic shape.
Sunday 30th June 2024The quality of the salmon being caught continued to impress last week as fish up to 20lbs were landed and many lost. As expected, with the benefit of extra water the first half of the week was more productive, but through the sizing down of flies and some early starts, fish were caught each day as 33 were landed.
Sunday 23rd June 2024Once again, favourable water conditions have helped catches to remain steady during the past week with 24 fish landed across the beats. At times, anglers had to contend with strong northerly winds and a rising river with both found to make fishing difficult and fish less cooperative.
Next week’s visiting anglers will have welcomed last night’s rise in water that will put the river in good order for the coming week. It’s not often that can be said two weeks in a row.
Sunday 16th June 2024The mix of weather over the last week has at times given us four seasons in a matter of minutes as the scattered rain/hail showers interrupted by bursts of sunshine were eventually persistent enough to raise the water level above zero on Wednesday.
Steady fishing was enjoyed across the river during the second half of the week and with a further, more significant lift in water yesterday, next week’s anglers will find the river in good order.
Sunday 9th June 2024With 3 inches registering on the gauge and still feeling the benefits of last week’s rise of water, the week began well with several fish landed. A small increase in water overnight into Tuesday may not have been the lift we were looking for, but it helped to keep things ticking over as 12 fish were landed during the week.
Grilse were seen making their way through the river in the latter part of the week but were reluctant to cooperate. With luck, their attitude will change for next week’s anglers!
Sunday 2nd June 2024Faced with pretty dire fishing conditions, anglers were mainly limited to early and late stints on the river in an attempt to coax response from fish in the early part of last week. During this time, the trout fishing made for an excellent alternative through the day as some great sport was enjoyed on various lochs.
Thankfully, rain arrived on Wednesday night and, while not in the volume that had been forecast, was truly needed to help bring the river back into order and water temperatures down. Anglers enjoyed some sport on the back of this water and while the nine fish landed may not have been a bonanza it was a step in the right direction.
Sunday 26th May 2024Fishing conditions during the past week have been challenging with blazing sunshine and soaring temperatures in effect writing off most days. Choosing their moments to fish wisely, anglers did provoke responses from fish but sadly none of these shows of interest materialised into anything more than a short connection.
Sunday 19th May 2024As has been the case during many of the past weeks, Monday saw the greatest interest from fish, resulting in a couple landed. The falling river and bright overhead skies made conditions difficult as the week progressed with just one more fish caught.
Summer tactics have been deployed with the use of smaller flies and lighter rods as the river level dropped and the water temperature rose. However, anglers would do well to remember that these are still big fish, and the use of light nylon is not recommended!
Sunday 12th May 2024With favourable water conditions at the start of the week, action was enjoyed on Monday with a fish landed and several lost. Sadly, interest from fish diminished, with one more landed, as the week progressed as an unhelpful easterly wind coupled with bright sun plagued anglers’ efforts.
The forecast for the week ahead looks a little more appealing for salmon fishing in terms of cloud and wind direction. With luck, a few of the showers forecast may help too.
Sunday 5th May 2024The week began well with a brace of fish landed on Monday morning and a couple more lost by the end of the day. Reasonable conditions in terms of water height, including an unexpected small rise on Friday, gave anglers confidence though they had to work hard for the further three fish landed.
Steven Edwards enjoyed a fantastic week landing three fish during his visit, including a superb 16lber. As we all know, salmon fishing is often about being in the right place at the right time; but it certainly helps if you’re doing the right thing too!
Sunday 28th April 2024Although enjoying favourable water over the past week, anglers had to deal with difficult and cold winds which curtailed effort and undoubtedly had a bearing on the final tally of two fish landed. The greater number of fish seen towards the end of the week was certainly encouraging despite their reluctance to cooperate.
The week ahead looks promising following rain overnight which has helped to lift the river level slightly, while all will welcome the lighter winds forecast.
Sunday 21st April 2024
While already benefiting from last weekend’s rise, two further lifts in water height during the week ensured that anglers enjoyed favourable conditions for the most part this week. Although, as so often happens, the best of the water coincided with the two brightest days seemingly cancelling out the positive effect of the extra water on these days.
First time visitor to the Halladale, Gonzalo Rodriguez Lopez, had a trip to remember and opened the 2024 account with a beautiful 8lb fresh run fish. Two further fish were added for the week by a fellow newcomer to the river, Graham Muat. Remarkably, these were Grahams’ first ever salmon!
Sunday 14th April 2024With a cold easterly wind dominating during the past week, it probably comes as no surprise to hear that action remained limited for rods across the river with only the occasional fish seen. Saturday’s welcome rise in water height and, crucially, the change in wind to a southerly direction renewed anglers’ optimism which was so near to being rewarded as a fresh fish was lost at the feet.
The weather forecast remains unsettled for the coming week and with the benefit of yesterday’s rise in water prospects look more favourable for next week’s anglers.
Sunday 7th April 2024Surprisingly, despite reasonable conditions at times, there were no fresh fish caught this week and we now see March slip by without the first fish being landed. Reassuringly, fish are at least being seen by anglers to keep their confidence up.
Sunday 31st March 2024In contrast to the previous week, the weather during the last 7 days has been dominated by strong winds which brought challenging conditions for our visiting anglers. Faced with near gale force winds, they were at least successful in connecting with a fresh fish during their short trip though sadly this was lost as the fish attempted to leave the pool.
The rain over the weekend provided a very welcome rise in water and with a return to more favourable weather forecast, especially during the first half of the week, the prospects look good for next week’s anglers.
Sunday 24th March 2024With a real feeling of spring in the air at times over the past week and the days finally stretching, we were delighted to welcome guests back to the river for the 2024 season. While no fresh fish were caught, there were still some extremely well-mended kelts to keep anglers on their toes - it was a pleasure to see the level of care that was given to these fish during their careful release.
Monday 18th March 2024With the river now drawn to a close, we can look back at the 2023 season as certainly having been one of two halves.
Anglers who visited between April to July will remember only too well the unrelenting drought conditions which, coupled with high water temperatures, not only affected the fishing but more seriously were of concern to fish welfare. Thankfully, July brought a change of weather and of fortunes as we enjoyed regular top-ups right to the season's end with the majority of anglers visiting blessed with fantastic sport.
The past week has been no exception and while already enjoying favourable water and sport, a mid-week rise ensured this continued as 86 fish were landed to give a season total of 739 salmon and grilse.
As always, a message of thanks is conveyed to all those who visited, fished, and helped to make this such a successful season while a special note of appreciation is extended to all anglers who during those early months displayed a huge level of understanding and kindly refrained from fishing at critical times.
Sunday 1st October 2023Anglers were blessed with a substantial rise in water height on Monday which cleared the river of the weed growth that had built up during the warm conditions over the past couple of weeks and helped to spread fish throughout the system too. As if this extra water wasn’t enough, continued rain during the week lifted the river on several occasions and ensured the resulting fishing was memorable for all parties with 113 fish landed. The fact that there were so many first salmon caught made it all the more special.
Sunday 24th September 2023The weather during the past week has had much more of an autumnal feel and even produced the first light, overnight frost which helped to bring the water temperature down to a seasonal level. This cooler water, coupled at times with a brisk wind, helped as 13 fish were landed for the week.
In the absence of rain, these conditions are always welcome but anglers will be watching the weather closely over the next 24 hours in the hope that the forecast is accurate!
Sunday 17th September 2023Temperatures soared across the north this week with thermometers reaching close to double the seasonal average, and despite what would normally be classed as reasonable water heights, the fish were reluctant to participate with two fish landed. Anglers must be praised for taking the sensible approach and resting the water during the hottest days, instead opting to enjoy other activities.
Looking to the week ahead, the falling air and water temperatures forecast will certainly be helpful in reigniting interest from fish - as will any rain!
Sunday 10th September 2023At times, this week's anglers were blessed with seemingly perfect conditions following two good rises in water and, at times, the fish cooperated as 61 fish were landed. Unsurprisingly, the best of the fishing was experienced during the first half of the week as the clouds gave way to sunshine and blue skies towards the weekend.
Sunday 3rd September 2023With the water slowly slipping away, and the midges ready to pounce at the slightest drop in wind, anglers had to work hard during the first four days of the week with 14 fish caught during this period. Fortunately, two days of wind and rain over Friday and Saturday addressed both these problems and helped to bring the weekly tally to 36.
With the river rising rapidly on both days the fishing was never fully on, but will certainly mean next week's anglers are greeted with the most favourable water height.
Sunday 27th August 2023There were localised and heavy showers across the north during the start of the week which anglers were watching closely. Thankfully, following rain in the upper catchment on Monday (while the lower river bathed in sunshine) the river height was raised sufficiently to improve the fishing and help to bring the weekly tally to 39 fish.

Sunday 20th August 2023While the water height remained reasonable this week, and even helped by a very small mid-week rise, the fishing has once again proved difficult with 8 fish landed. One notable catch was for 8-year-old Harry Brown who caught his second-ever salmon and is well on the road to becoming a seasoned angler - well done, Harry!
Sunday 13th August 2023Unsurprisingly, with the water continuing to drop and following several weeks of very good fishing, the fish were found to be rather unresponsive at times this week. A small rise in water levels in the middle of the week coincided with a useful wind, both of which helped immensely to bring the weekly total to a respectable 25 fish.
Saturday 5th August 2023As the water height slowly fell over the last week, anglers had to work a little harder for results than we had become accustomed to throughout the past month. However, the 38 fish landed was a respectable return and produced good sport for those who chose their moments carefully.
Sunday 30th July 2023With another good rise in water at the start of the week followed by frequent smaller rises, anglers were blessed with excellent conditions resulting in a splendid 96 fish caught, being a mixture of salmon and grilse. With sea liced fish being caught throughout the river and the weather forecast being unsettled prospects for the week ahead look promising.
Saturday 22nd July 2023Having waited since early April for a spate to freshen the river properly, anglers this week were "blessed" with three in a week and it was definitely a case of being careful what you wish for!
As expected, following such a prolonged dry spell the river was incredibly dirty from the first and most substantial rise with fishing results understandably affected to begin with. As the water settled excellent catches were enjoyed as 83 fish were landed for the week.
With more unsettled weather forecast for the week ahead, the prospects again look promising and make a welcome change.
Sunday 16th July 2023Already benefiting from the small rise of water at the tail end of the previous week, anglers were met with a rising river on Monday morning following overnight rain. Welcomed showers over the next couple of days helped to keep the river topped and, while maybe not the spate we would have liked to flush the river, certainly made a difference as 55 fish were landed for the week.
Sunday 9th July 2023Following a small lift in the river on Friday night, the week ended positively as anglers enjoyed the benefit of the extra flow which helped to take the weekly tally to 20 fish. While this may not have been the spate we were all hoping for, it is certainly most welcome and vastly improves the outlook for the coming week.
Sunday 2nd July 2023The thunder plumps forecast for the north arrived this week though, sadly, they fell in the wrong catchment for us! So localised were the showers that while some neighbouring rivers were blessed with rises to over 2 feet we had to settle for a small lift that brought the river up to 2 inches on the gauge - but for this we were grateful. The cooling effect of this extra water was felt immediately bringing water temperatures down to an acceptable level for angling and fish were able to be caught in small numbers with 12 landed during the second half of the week.
Again, rain is forecast for many days in the coming week and we have to remain hopeful that on at least one of these occasions, we receive more than just a token gesture.
Sunday 25th June 2023Unbelievably, the scorching weather has only increased in intensity this week and with it, the water temperature has peaked at over 25°C during the past 4 days. In effect, this has brought fishing to a standstill with anglers kindly refraining from fishing during these conditions.
The forecast for the week ahead shows periods of heavy rain which, if received, will bring much welcome relief to the river, the fish, and to the anglers.
Sunday 18th June 2023It has been nearly two months since the last "spate" on the river and the need for rain grows stronger each week. Sadly, we were without reprieve this week with little in the way of helpful weather to aid anglers as they faced bright sun and rising air temperatures on most days. However, by reducing the rod effort to shorter sessions, and by limiting the fishing to times when the conditions were at least slightly more conducive to salmon fishing, anglers were able to land 7 fish throughout the week.
The advantage of this approach in conditions like these is the fact that it minimises the potential stress to fish as water temperatures continue to rise, something we will monitor closely over the coming week.
Saturday 10th June 2023As the wait for rain across the north continues the river has fallen further below zero on the gauge and with the absence of strong winds which had helped so much the previous week anglers were faced with extremely tough conditions. Thankfully, a combination of cooler night-time temperatures and the occasional overcast day has helped to keep the water temperatures down and most certainly contributed to the 3 fish landed this week.
Up to this point, grilse have been seen over the past couple of weeks but have remained reluctant to respond to anglers' offerings – it was nice to see one finally obliged.
Sunday 4th June 2023With less than a quarter of the rainfall received this month compared to last May, low water conditions continue to prove challenging as the river height sits well below zero. Fortunately, by employing summer tactics, and making use of the wind when it blew, 7 fish were landed during the course of the week.
Sadly, the forecast for the week ahead appears unlikely to produce rain and with the bright sun becoming a dominant feature anglers may find greater success by concentrating efforts at each end of the day.
Sunday 28th May 2023With little in the way of meaningful rain and the river continuing to fall in height, the strong winds during the beginning of the week were a blessing to anglers with those who were able to take advantage of it being rewarded with salmon of exceptional quality. As the week progressed and the wind waned, so did the level of cooperation from fish highlighting the importance of a good ripple in low water conditions which had contributed so much to the final tally of 10 fish.
Sunday 21st May 2023As a whole and considering the water height and mixed weather, the total of 9 fish caught this week was a good result. For those anglers who scored more heavily, varied tactics were key to success as fish were caught on weighted flies to hitches, demonstrating the importance of changing with the conditions.
Sunday 14th May 2023With more fish lost than caught during the past week, it served as a reminder of the fine margins involved when salmon fishing, especially in the spring, and the weekly total of 4 fish could have been significantly different.
As always at this time of year, all the fish caught were memorable and of exceptional quality but none more so than that caught by Don Oscroft, enjoying his 90th year, who was suitably rewarded for his efforts in the wind with his first Halladale salmon. Having read in the gamebook of the anglers’ success using her flies the previous week, Don was fishing one of the flies tied by Aurelia Sweeting, aged 10, and tempted the most beautiful of sea-liced fish making him a very happy man indeed - Well done Don!
Sunday 7th May 2023In contrast to the previous week, anglers were blessed with considerably better conditions throughout much of this week with correlating results. A small, steady rise in water during Monday, coupled with strong wind and cloud, helped proceedings get underway with 4 fish caught. There were further small, but welcome rises, followed by a more meaningful lift to 12” in the latter half of the week all contributing to a further 5 fish, bringing the total for the week to 9.
Sunday 30th April 2023There was little to report in the way of action on the river this week as a mix of multiple factors weighed heavy against anglers’ chances. At least if the forecast is correct for the week ahead, lack of wind or high temperatures won’t be matters for complaint!

Sadly, the expected action failed to materialise as anglers found the fish extremely unresponsive with only a couple of brief connections early in the week to report.
The weather during the second half of the week may have been far from ideal for salmon fishing but this didn't stop anglers from enjoying it. Maybe the long winter had something to do with that!

Although the water height continued to fall away slowly last week and the prospect of rain became ever more welcome, anyone familiar with the Halladale would still have been content in the knowledge that sufficient water remained for fish to enter the system.
Sightings of fish entering the river early in the week gave the rods encouragement while the 2 salmon caught certainly rewarded them for their efforts. Like all salmon at this time of year, both fish landed were exceptional specimens and are enough to truly make an angler’s week.
Sunday 9th April 2023A small lift to the river level at the start of the week meant that this week’s rods were greeted with fantastic water conditions on Monday, and as the water slowly tailed away anticipations were high. Anglers reported a few close encounters during the second half of the week as the best of the weather was experienced before the only fresh fish of the week was landed on Friday.
The warmer conditions forecast for the next few days will be a welcome change from the bitterly cold wind which has continued to chill anglers and should, with hope, bring a more Spring-like-feeling!

While the weather has been much improved over the course of the last week, little rain was required to raise the water height on most days leaving anglers with very unsettled conditions. However, as the water subsided yesterday Peter Macgregor landed a beautiful 8lb sea-liced fish and registered the first Halladale salmon for 2023 – Well done, Peter!
Anglers arriving today will find a return to more wintery weather over the next couple of days but will also find the river and prospects looking good.
Sunday 26th March 2023Last week started in much the same way as the previous ended, with snow carpeting the whole catchment and widespread snow showers continuing to present a challenge as they were driven in by gale-force winds. Fortunately, the ice which had proved troublesome the previous week had now gone and fishing was resumed as we welcomed the return of visiting anglers.
By midweek the weather and river conditions had improved and the best of the fishing was enjoyed on Wednesday and Thursday before heavy snowmelt raised the river beyond fishable levels. Encouragingly, a fish was lost during this period, and this fact will further excite this week’s anglers who already find the river running at a fantastic level.
Monday 20th March 2023The season was yet again capped off by another week blessed with fantastic water levels and really what was the first proper spate since April. Three rises in water throughout the week meant that the river was seldom truly settled and with gale-force winds to add, the conditions were more than a little challenging. Anglers did incredibly well to deal with these conditions and the weekly total of 67 fish was well deserved.
There's always sadness as another season draws to an end and with the thought of a long winter ahead. However, as we all know, this is the most important time of the year for the salmon as they busily move into position in preparation for spawning to lay down future generations.
As always, we thank all anglers and friends who fished and supported the river this season and wish everyone well throughout the winter.
Saturday 1st October 2022A perfectly timed rise in water height on Sunday raised the river and, for the first time since May, brought the water temperature down to single fingers. Both factors were beneficial, and anglers took advantage of these conditions to land 44 fish during the week.
As we slip into the final week of the season, there is a distinctly autumnal feel to the conditions with a weather forecast to match. If correct, the wind may become challenging at times but at least, there should be no shortage of water!
Sunday 25th September 2022While the continued unsettled weather and the rain showers it brought were a useful aid in keeping the river topped up this week, the accompanying wind was rather less welcome and rendered the conditions extremely challenging at times. Considering anglers reported that the fish were never fully "on", the final tally of 49 was very respectable.
Sunday 18th September 2022The rain and changeable weather during the first half of the week saw multiple rises in water height and made for an unsettled river. While fish were caught from midweek onwards, 12 in all, their response was rather less than had been hoped and the total number was certainly not helped by the return to summer weather on Saturday.
Sunday 11th September 2022Considering the conditions anglers were faced with during most of the week, a return of 9 fish was more than might possibly have been expected and highlights the importance of picking your moment.
Sunday 4th September 2022With the water height still marginally above zero, the week started encouragingly with four fish caught on Monday. However, despite favourable overhead conditions and a welcome southerly wind through much of the week, fish were unresponsive showing little or no interest resulting in no further fish being landed. As has been the case on many occasions this season, a good drop of rain would be most welcome to freshen things up!
Sunday 28th August 2022Following heavy rain over the weekend, the river peaked at 2 feet on Sunday night blessing anglers with the most significant rise in water since May, and with further showers, good water was enjoyed throughout the week. The resulting 65 fish were accompanied by countless connections providing good sport and a respectable weekly total.
Sunday 21st August 2022With the exception of Monday, when the river was running at 4 inches and fish cooperated, anglers had to work hard and pick their moments for results this week. The weekly total of 15 fish included 3 first salmon including a very special one for 7-year-old Harry Brown who showed great determination at such a young age. Well done, Harry!
Sunday 14th August 2022Proceedings began with wall-to-wall sunshine and the gauges reading marginally below zero. Still, through some fortunate showers, the river height climbed slowly through the course of the week, and better all-round conditions helped to end the week on a high note. The weekly total of 21 fish was boosted by 10 landed on Saturday alone.
Sunday 7th August 2022Having missed much of the promised rain over the weekend, as anglers arrived last Sunday the river was still running below zero and with large sections blanketed with weed, the prospects looked bleak for the week ahead. Fortunately, some heavy downpours fell in the upper reaches during the evening and the subsequent rise in water was the largest since May peaking at 22 inches.
As expected, the river ran incredibly dirty with such a large amount of weed to clear and fishing was all but stopped on Monday while waiting for the water to settle. The following days produced some fantastic sport to give a weekly total of 81 fish and a week to remember for many.
Sunday 31st July 2022Soaring water temperatures of 22°C during the early half of the week switched off both fish and anglers. The hope of rain which was promised by the forecasters again failed to raise the river sufficiently but did help, along with more agreeable weather conditions, to bring the water temperatures down which livened proceedings and enabled 5 fish to be caught.
Presently, we wait in hope that this evening the forecasters have it right for once.
Sunday 24th July 2022With challenging conditions such as those experienced during the past week, it's often difficult to remain positive. However, it's worth noting that all parties fishing the river managed to catch fish - an achievement never guaranteed even in good conditions - and again the final tally of 22 exceeded many expectations.
Sunday 17th July 2022Following last weekend's rise in water levels, anglers found the river in good shape on Monday morning and were blessed further as rain during the day helped to ensure that levels remained favourable for the remainder of the week. Generally, conditions were suited for fishing with only a couple of bright days to slow the action though the wind did prove tricky at times. The final tally of 37 fish could have been considerably higher given the number of lost fish but this is often the case with grilse.
Sunday 10th July 2022When faced with a river height of minus 3 inches on Monday morning it's unlikely many would have thought that we could end the week with 19 fish. However, anglers picked away during the first half of the week while making the most of when conditions leaned towards favourable. The promise of rain that has continued to evade us over the last few weeks finally fell in sufficient volume to raise the river and help end the week on a high note. While this rise in water may not equate to a spate, it has given the river and next week's anglers a much needed boost.
Sunday 3rd July 2022Once again, fish were found to be most responsive during the first two days this week when helped immensely by better overhead conditions and a favourable wind anglers at least experienced lots of action. As the week progressed the weather did nothing to help efforts and success was limited to those anglers who were willing to put the hours in early and late. The tally of 5 fish could have been significantly more was it not for the seemingly amazing ability of grilse to evade capture!
Sunday 26th June 2022Despite adverse conditions, fish seemed fairly responsive at the beginning of the week as close to half of the weekly total was accounted for on Monday alone. Unfortunately, this cooperation was short-lived as success dwindled and anglers had to work hard to tally up 8 fish for the week.
Sunday 19th June 2022Grilse caught outnumbered salmon for the first time this season as anglers registered 14 fish for the week. The bright and still weather during the first 3 days made for challenging conditions with early and late fishing rewarded. As the weather changed towards the weekend bringing strong winds, fish became more responsive even during more sociable hours.
Sunday 12th June 2022Greeted with good conditions at the start of the week, anglers made the most of the extra flow and cloud cover to score well on Monday and Tuesday. Although fish continued to be caught every day, the threat of sunshine and blue skies materialised and had the inevitable effect throughout the rest of the week. Amongst the 32 fish landed were a sprinkling of grilse with good numbers also seen running through.
Sunday 5th June 2022
The rain finally arrived last weekend in sufficient amounts, lifting the river to 24 inches overnight on Sunday and breaking the previous month's drought. Unsurprisingly, fishing began a little slowly on Monday morning as fish adjusted to the water levels and began moving between pools. As the water and fish settled, the action began and fantastic sport was experienced throughout the rest of the week with a total of 59 salmon landed.
A couple of smaller rises during the week have helped to keep the water raised and will be most welcome by next week's anglers who will find the river in excellent condition.

Once again the action this week was experienced in short periods as fish seemed to switch on properly for brief spells, during which 5 fish were landed and several others lost. For the rest of the time, lots of fish were raised and moved to anglers' flies but without any real commitment.

The promise of rain was given on many occasions throughout the past week but as is so often the case failed to fall in the quantity required to make any significant difference to the water levels. Even the wind always welcomed in low water was at times too strong and never quite in the right direction to give the desired ripple. Nevertheless, anglers found concentrated moments of success and did well to land 6 fish in these tough conditions.

Faced with less than ideal conditions and with little prospect of rain on the forecast, this week's anglers had resigned themselves to a tough low water week on arrival. It's fair to say that the 12 fish landed exceeded expectations and once again demonstrated that there is always hope!
Sunday 8th May 2022
With largely reasonable conditions, fish have continued to be caught throughout the river during the last week. When blowing, the northerly wind was a welcome aid against the falling water levels and helped as anglers managed to add another 7 fish to the book.
Yesterday's rain may not have amounted to the quantity desired, but has at least raised the water levels slightly and will undoubtedly help during the start of next week.

The water height remained reasonable at the start of the week with still enough flow to allow anglers to swing a fly although overhead conditions were becoming less favourable. Taking these conditions into account, the final tally of 6 fish was a good result and certainly could have been higher if fortunes had been kinder as a number of fish were also lost.
Wielding a salmon rod for the first time this week, Ellie Measham took to the river like a natural and was quickly rewarded with her first salmon weighing in at 10lbs.

Following last week's washout, fishing began on Monday with the river sitting at an almost perfect 16 inches and favourable overhead conditions to match. Midweek saw another rise of water that slowed fishing briefly but ensured anglers enjoyed fantastic conditions for the remainder of the week with 11 fish landed and numerous more lost along the way.
Without doubt, the highlight of the week was for Cameron Lipp, aged 13, to hook and land his first ever salmon which weighed 9lbs. A first fish is always a huge achievement at any time, but to accomplish this feat in April deserves even more recognition!
Sunday 17th April 2022So often anglers spend the weeks and months leading up to their fishing trip studying various weather forecasts and praying there will be sufficient rain to raise water levels to favourable heights. After this past week of weather, this week’s anglers will agree that you can in fact have too much of a good thing!
On a positive note, the lochs are full to the brim and the hills are soaked. All much needed following last season’s drought and will help to continue to restore the all-important groundwater levels.
Sunday 10th April 2022Fishing effort increased this week as we welcomed back anglers into the cottages and across the river, following two years of cancelations for some. The mixture of weather experienced throughout the week reminded all just how changeable conditions can be during these early months, sunshine, and flat calms through to strong northerly winds with snow! Precipitation of any kind was gladly received as was the slow 4-inch rise over the course of several days: not exactly a spate but a welcome increase in flow.
Long-standing stalwart of the Halladale, especially during the early months, Roger Edwards, got the season off the mark with a beautiful 12lb fish. This is the third time Roger has managed this feat and I wouldn’t bet against him repeating it in the future.
Fishing the river for the first time, Angus Ritchie added a second fish for the week and season of 7lbs on the following day and was unlucky to lose another later in the week.
Sunday 3rd April 2022As the north enjoyed another week of glorious weather, even by summer standards, sightings of fish and a couple of offers were as close as anglers came.
While the change in weather forecast during the coming week looks substantially cooler, hopefully, it will also bring sufficient rain too.
Monday 28th March 2022For the most part, the bright sun and cold winds which dominated over the last week meant fishing conditions were far from ideal on the river. Even so, the visiting anglers were encouraged not just to see fish but to have interest also.
Tuesday 22nd March 2022With an improvement in the weather and conditions recently, rivers across the North have slowly started to awaken with the first fish being reported from several rivers over the last week. Unfortunately, there is no such report for the Halladale yet, but low rod effort in these early months is always a factor.
We have been busy de-winterising the river and huts in preparation for the return of our visiting anglers In the coming weeks, hopefully, the report of the first fish will follow soon after.
Monday 7th March 2022
At last, the real rain we have been waiting patiently for since May eventually arrived on Sunday night much to the delight of this season’s final groups of anglers. Rising water (with more than a touch of colour) put a halt to proceedings on Monday with the river peaking at a little over 4 feet late in the afternoon, but as the water levels fell the river exploded into life with a total of 110 fish landed over the next memorable 3 days!
Few would disagree that the 2021 season has been one of multiple challenges; the lack of water being the cause of many of them. So, while we have finished the season on the most spectacular of highs, we are also mindful of the many loyal anglers who have endured some of the most torrid conditions this summer, and as I convey our thanks and appreciation to all who visited this year, a special note of thanks is due to those anglers who found conditions far from ideal.
Friday 1st October 2021The fishing was nicely set up for anglers this week following a rise to 6 inches on the gauge on Sunday night. While again not a spate, this added water, after such a dry summer, had the desired effect on the fish with 21 fish landed on Monday alone - the weekly total of 75 fish is our best by far this season.
This evening's overnight forecast looks promising with a decent band of rain covering the north and with only 4 days of the season remaining, another lift in water levels would help to bring the season to a satisfactory close and would certainly please next week’s rods also!
Sunday 26th September 2021As can only be expected following such a long, dry spell lasting since May, the additional water this week made the river extremely dirty during the first half of the week, and coupled with the bright overhead conditions, fishing was much slower during this time. With better overall conditions for the final three days, anglers found fish to be much more responsive and enjoyed the luxury of being able to swing a fly in flowing water once again! I’m sure that the 34 fish landed will encourage next week’s anglers too.
Sunday 19th September 2021There will have been very few anglers either already in the North or about to visit who were not watching this week’s weather forecast with huge amounts of hope and even anticipation…. Unfortunately, like so often this season, the rain amounted to much less than the experts had predicted with the result being an 8-inch rise overnight on Saturday. On a positive note, although not a roaring spate this is the largest rise in water levels since May!
Another positive note was the 12 fish anglers managed to land this week, in spite of the fact that a few days were effectively lost through soaring temperatures and lack of wind.
Sunday 12th September 2021While continuing to adopt unorthodox tactics, and aided by the cloud cover, anglers managed to tempt another 6 fish this week. Unfortunately, as the week progressed, the river levels dropped further and the wind was lost resulting in lower fishing effort.
Having now slipped into September, the chance of more unsettled weather increases and with it, the hope of a real change in conditions does too. Anglers will be watching next week’s forecast with great interest – and hope!
Sunday 5th September 2021To add to the challenge of the continued low water, anglers were faced with bright sun, rising water temperatures, and a complete lack of wind this week. Unsurprisingly, fish showed little interest for the majority of the week with even the trout parties finding a lack of cooperation. Finally, with better overhead conditions on Saturday fish became more responsive resulting in 3 fish being landed. With little sign of rain on the forecast, we can only hope that enough wind and cloud develop to help next week’s rods.
Sunday 29th August 2021Proceedings began this week with 2 inches registering on the gauge which, given the average water height over the summer, almost looked like a spate! This extra water, strong winds, and favourable cloud cover gave anglers reasonable conditions as they landed 29 fish for the week.
Sunday 22nd August 2021A small rise of 3 inches mid-week helped to improve conditions for this week’s anglers who took advantage to land 22 fish during the course of the week. With water temperatures continuing to drop, resident fish have also become more active with some even showing a little cooperation. While we have again missed out on the substantial rain that continues to fall on the west, we must be grateful for the little we have received and hope that one of these days we are blessed!
Sunday 15th August 2021Thunderstorms surrounded us many times this week dropping large amounts of rain in sight of anglers, but unfortunately, we always remained just on the edge of the weather. Similar to last week, the cooler weather has had benefits, and the little rain that fell on the catchment at least stopped the river levels from falling further. Given the conditions, anglers did well to land 20 fish during the week and were grateful for the company of the wind when it arrived.
Sunday 8th August 2021As torrential downpours and thunderstorms travelled through Scotland this week many rivers finally received the much-needed spate that has eluded us all this summer. Unfortunately, as so often happens, the rain stopped short of the far North leaving some of the rivers across the North coast needing more. On a positive note, the rise of a few inches we received has helped to reduce water temperatures, something we must be grateful for as fish welfare is the priority.
Making the most of the fresher feel to the water, coupled with good overhead conditions, anglers did well to land 21 fish for the week. As has become normal practice this summer, trout flies hitched across the surface accounted for the vast majority of fish.
Sunday 1st August 2021Thankfully, a cooler start to last week helped to lower the water temperature that had been rising to worrying levels, and although still without rain, anglers managed to land 3 fish during this time before the heatwave kicked in. With a more unsettled forecast for the week ahead, we live in hope.
Sunday 25th July 2021With no sign of the drought that is gripping the north breaking, it was remarkable that anglers caught 10 fish across the river this week. Once again, careful angling pressure has been applied with loch trout fishing filling in between the visits. This approach has benefits for both the anglers and the fish.

With the river still sitting below summer levels the rain we received on Wednesday, although not heavy, was certainly most welcome and sufficient to add an extra inch to the water height. This slight rise, coupled with careful fishing effort, helped as we added 10 fish to the book this week. As is so often the case with fresh grilse, many others were lost, although the fun is always in hooking them! Unorthodox flies have again accounted for fish this week as trout tactics continue to be adopted.
Sunday 11th July 2021As the wait for rain continues across the north, the fishing has proved difficult again this week with soaring temperatures and blue skies on many days. The wind so badly needed for low water success was absent for much of the week and without a ripple, fish were easily seen in the pools – as were anglers by the fish! With cloud and wind making a rare appearance together, the only 3 fish caught for the week were taken on Tuesday, all were sea-liced grilse and two were caught on a trout fly. Anglers who headed to the hill lochs in search of trout did have success, but found that trout, like salmon, also have a dislike of the sun!
Sunday 4th July 2021Changeable weather conditions throughout the week, including a day of wetter weather on Thursday, gave hope of a more significant rise in water levels. Unfortunately, the resulting rise only equated to an extra 1.5 inches though this was enough to see a substantial increase in action for anglers. With 6 entries in the book and numerous other connections, fish were seen running all the way through the system and gave sport on all the beats.
Sunday 27th June 2021Faced with another week of difficult conditions, anglers had to work hard to register 3 fish in the book – 2 of which were grilse. While reluctant to fully commit, there were the usual inspections and shows of interest from fish that always help to keep morale up. While resting the river between morning and evening visits, exciting fishing was enjoyed targeting hill-loch trout. Some of which were found to run as hard as salmon!

Without any meaningful rain this week, the river levels have continued to drop to summer lows and in response, anglers have adopted summer tactics to winkle out 4 fish in what has been a pretty tough week. Lack of wind during early morning stints compounded the issue but did allow for some exciting Icelandic-style sight fishing that resulted in all the action except the photo!
Next week’s rods will welcome both the wind forecast for the start of the week and the sightings of fresh fish on recent tides. I’m sure some rain would be equally well received.
Sunday 13th June 2021The conditions have proved difficult on the river for anglers this week as dwindling water levels and blue skies ensured fish kept their heads down during the day. With a little water remaining at the start of the week fish showed at least some interest but, as was the case towards the end of the previous week, failed to commit fully as numerous fish were lost. Mike Sanders contributed greatly to the weekly tally of 5 fish by using his low water experience to enjoy sport on most days.
Early morning and evening sessions are likely to prove most effective for next week's anglers as we wait for the rain to stir things up.
Sunday 6th June 2021
Following torrential rain on Monday that put a stop to fishing from mid-day, the river was lifted over the gauges to peak at 4.5 feet in the late afternoon and set up the water for the week ahead. Good fishing followed for the next few days as water and overhead conditions remained favourable, but the arrival of the sun from Friday afternoon slowed the action considerably - morning and late evenings still proving productive. With close to as many fish lost as caught, the final tally of 25 fish could have been very different but it was a week of quality, not quantity!

Although the water levels have remained favourable this week the fishing has proved tough at times with the cold, easterly wind continuing to keep temperatures well below the average and a day-time low of 3°C recorded on Thursday. Again, the quality of the salmon caught was exceptional with a high proportion of 3SW fish. The first connection with a grilse was made on Saturday but unfortunately, as is often the case, it was all too brief.

This week’s anglers already thought their luck was in as they began fishing on Monday with the river sitting at 12” and, more importantly, with fish cooperating. However, two further rises of levels during the week ensured good water remained as the rods make the most of the conditions tallying up 31 fish in the process.
With the water holding up well and conditions still looking favourable there is much hope for next week’s anglers.
Sunday 16th May 2021
The cold weather has continued this week along with the strong, biting N/E winds. Anglers utilised this wind in the early part of the week while the river remained low to land a couple of fish and receive lots of interest from other fish that just didn’t materialise. Following overnight rain on Wednesday, the river rose to 3’ on Thursday and a few more fish were added towards the end of the week giving a weekly total of 5. Encouragingly, the majority of fish were sea-liced so with another small lift last night, next week's rods will start fishing with good water and some fresh fish too.
Sunday 9th May 2021Following rain at the beginning of the week, there was the hope of a decent rise in water levels for our returning anglers. Unfortunately, a small, gradual upward tick of a couple of inches was all that it amounted to. Coupled with the cold N/E wind conditions were far from perfect as temperatures stayed low throughout. Although no fish were landed there were at least connections and increased sightings towards the end of the week.
Sunday 2nd May 2021As we all know, tomorrow marks the day when we will see a further easing of Covid rules across Scotland and the reopening of accommodations that will allow us to welcome back visiting anglers to the river. Although this comes too late for a number of our regular anglers who would have normally been fishing over the last month we look forward to when they return next.
The weather during the last week has been far from ideal for salmon fishing with bright blue skies throughout most days and the favourable southerly on Monday being short-lived before settling into the cold wind which blighted the rest of the week. Looking forward, the weather appears unsettled for the week ahead and the rain promised by the forecasters is now needed as the river level has dropped below zero.
Sunday 25th April 2021The week began with the river running at a great height of 15” but falling away swiftly. By midweek when a couple of rods ventured out, the best of the water had been, and the overhead conditions were challenging. Early next week looks like the most promising of weather, and with the chance of a little rain to help keep the water levels up too.
Sunday 18th April 2021The return to wintery conditions has seen snow on the ground on many days this week and kept fishing effort on the river to an absolute minimum. Snowmelt during the day has given us unsettled water levels in the second half of the week but will ensure we start next week with good water and with the spring-like weather forecast, the prospects look good.
Sunday 11th April 2021The rain arrived as forecast at the beginning of the week, lifting the river over the gauges to a little more than 4 feet on Wednesday. As the water settled towards the end of the week, we had our first fish for the season recorded; a beautiful 11lb hen landed in Ashills. The weather for the week ahead looks challenging, and the return to wintery conditions may have anglers question the term “Spring fishing!”
Sunday 4th April 2021With the river level slowly falling away throughout the last week to around the 1” mark it sits at now, the rain forecast over the next couple of days will be very welcome and, should it materialise, will lift the levels to a more enticing height for both anglers and fish! The spring tides at the start of the coming week will also help to push fish into the river.

Sunday 28th March 2021This week began with excellent conditions and the anglers out on Monday were full of hope. Unfortunately, only a sighting of fish was reported before more rain overnight lifted the river to just shy of 3’. Conditions remained good as the water tailed-off nicely as the week progressed, though the strong northerly wind proved tiresome at times.
Sunday 21st March 2021Conditions on the river remained favourable all week as the water height sat predominantly around the 1ft mark. Although I am unable to report a fish being landed this week, contact was made on Saturday though sadly it was all too brief!

The water levels dropped away quickly as the fair-weather remained with us this week. Unfortunately, the spring tides in which there was much hope coincided with less-than-ideal fishing conditions and the wait continues for a 1st fish. Today’s rain has lifted the river from zero to above the 1ft mark and with more rain on the forecast for the week ahead, it looks highly unlikely that there will be a shortage of water!
With further details on the easing of restrictions in Scotland expected by mid-March, we hope to be able to give some guidance in the coming weeks to the traveling anglers due to fish with us over the next couple of months.

Although blustery at the beginning, the weather has improved as the week progressed blessing us with warm spring-like conditions over the weekend. The river levels have been favourable for the anglers out on the water, dropping slowly through the week from 15” to the 6” it sits at presently. As we slip into March, and with the large spring tides over the next couple of days, the prospects for that 1st fish of the season increase!
Sunday 28th February 2021With the snow and ice gone some local anglers were able to cast a fly on the river towards the end of the week and as the water levels dropped to a favourable height of 16” conditions were good. Now more than ever, the joy of being on the river is rewarding enough.
Monday 22nd February 2021
A change in weather over the weekend has brought warmer temperatures that accelerated the thaw across the river, raising the water height and dislodged the thick sheets of ice covering the pools. Ice dams built up behind bottlenecks on the way downstream creating huge, glacial walls that burst through and washed through the system. Once the water and ice subside, we will be able to assess any damage caused to pools and riverbanks. Hopefully, any damage will be to a minimum. On a brighter note, fishing will also be able to resume again!

With temperatures plummeting during the past week we have seen the already ice-edged river become completely frozen in many areas. Needless to say, there's not much chance of swinging a fly at the moment!

The season has quietly drawn to a close following the final 3 days of fishing this week. With the river plagued by low water conditions since early July there was hope for a final spate and flurry of activity to end the season. Unfortunately, the rains arrived too late to aid this week`s anglers who, in difficult conditions managed a very respectable 34 fish to lift the season total to 401.
2020 has been completely unprecedented with everyone of us having to make adjustments to many parts of our lives. As so many are aware this has meant cancellation of the annual trip to the Halladale for large numbers of our regular and longstanding anglers, all of whom have been truly missed.For those who have managed to make the trip north this has only been possible by adhering to necessary restrictions and following the recommended protocols.For this we thank you greatly.
As the nights lengthen, thoughts turn to repleneshing fly boxes and browsing books and blogs for new exciting tactics to deploy on the river next season ! Until then, we thank all who contributed to such a challenging season and wish all of our anglers a safe winter.
Friday 2nd October 2020As temperatures dropped this week, with nightime lows of -3c, there was a real Autumnal feel in the air. This certainly helped to lower the water temperature and stir up the cock fish ! The lift in water levels to 3″ towards the end of the week gave the best conditions we have seen for quite some time and anglers made the most of it landing 16 of the week`s 32 fish on Saturday.
Monday 28th September 2020Anglers found the river height around 2" for the first 3 days of the week-almost spate like conditions compared with most of the summer! As expected fish were slightly more cooperative with 12 of the week's 15 fish caught then. To test anglers further we had a return to high summer weather towards the end of the week with bright sun and blue skies. As expected the fish were uncooperative then!
Monday 21st September 2020Following a 4″ rise in water levels anglers found the fish much more responsive this week. As well as landing 27 across the river, many more were raised, moved and sometimes lost as the level of interest from fish ramped up a notch ! With only a few weeks left before the season ends we all hope for a big spate and final flurry of action.Until then we will be happy with the small rise we are blessed with.
Monday 14th September 2020Unfortunately this week it is the same story of low water and the continued wait for rain as two months have now passed since the last real rise in river levels. However we have continued to catch a few fish every week and this week was no different as anglers landed 8.
Monday 7th September 2020With no relief from the weather anglers had their work cut out again this week.A very welcome small rise on thursday coincided with bright sun which cancelled out the benefit of extra flow. The total of 6 fish landed for the week was helped by the large tides which encouraged fish to enter the lower stretches. Next week`s forecast of cooler weather will be welcome to anglers.
Monday 24th August 2020With low water conditions continuing anglers this week had the added challenge of bright sun coupled with little to no wind. As a result fishing effort was concentrated to the days of slightly more favourable conditions. The final tally of 8 fish was greatly helped by the youngsters of the Fraser party who showed real perserverance- and as we all know perserverance pays!
Tuesday 18th August 2020The rain showers forecast throughout the week didn`t amount to much in the end. However the slight rise on friday was enough to register on the positive side of zero ! This was just enough to make fish a little more cooperative towards anglers` offerings which contributed greatly towards the final tally of 14 for the week.
Monday 27th July 2020Grilse numbers across the North show no signs of slowing yet. However, falling river levels coupled with bright sun at times, meant anglers had to work hard for results this week.As the gauge slipped below zero the final tally of 33 was impressive.Some rain now would do wonders to stir things up!
Monday 20th July 2020The anglers this week took full advantage of last weekend`s rise in water levels to land 85 fish. Effective flies and techniques varied as the water dropped through the week, from large swinging coneheads through to hitching small tubes. The resulting fish were plump and in amazing condition. With good numbers still nosing in on every tide the prospects remain favourable for the coming week.
Monday 13th July 2020The hope of a more substantial rise in the water didn`t materialise at the beginning of the week, though this didn`t do much to deter the fish with 24 landed to light rod effort. Heavy rain on Saturday night lifted the river to over 3 foot and will see us start next week with prospects looking excellent. Due to cancellations there is some fishing availabilty during the remainder of the season but regrettably we cannot offer accommodation. Monday 6th July 2020Numbers of fish continue to build across the North Coast rivers as the grilse run strengthens.Given the low water and continued light rod effort, 10 fish landed is testament to that.Thunder showers over the weekend have raised the river slightly and, with further rain forecast during the week, this rise could turn into something more substantial. Now the Scottish Government is easing restrictions onj fishing and tourist accommodation we shall be contacting clients with existing bookings to see if we can make a plan for them.
Monday 29th June 2020Extremely light rod effort kept the tally of fish landed to 5 this week, with grilse counting for the majority.With the river level below zero we continue to see small numbers of these grilse entering the system but some meaningful rain would be welcometo help them on their way. Of course it would do the fishing no harm either ! The Government `announcement` about opening up tourism( and fishing) was a damp squib with no meaningful details provided.
Monday 22nd June 2020The rise in water last week was helpful in `turning on` some of the staler and more reluctant fish which had entered the system during lock-down. The total of 27 fish included a small number of well conditioned grilse. Hopefully, later this week we will get further information from the Scottish Government about plans to open up Highlands tourism in mid July.
Monday 15th June 2020With the river height below zero for most of the week , local anglers depended on a good ripple with top water action accounting for most of the 15 multi-sea-winter fish landed. Friday`s rain saw the river peak at over 5ft early on saturday and will have helped fish to spread through the system.We eagerly await further easing on fishing from the Scottish Government which hopefully will allow more of our usual guests to enjoy some fishing.

Friday`s rain saw the river peak at over 5ft on saturday and will have helped fish spread through the system.
Monday 8th June 2020It was a welcome sight indeed to see local rods fishing albeit in less than perfect conditions – low water and wall to wall sunshine. Nonetheless,some keen early mornimg anglers had action before sunrise and landed the first fish of the season on friday morning. Even more remarkable , it was a 4lb grilse ! At present fishing remains restricted to local anglers ( please contact Reuben or Audrey if interested). Hopefully, further easing of Government restrictions will allow anglers from further afield to visit before too long.
Monday 1st June 2020At last ! Fishing to start tomorrow friday 29th May. Due to restrictions only local community anglers at this stage. Hopefully we will be able to offer fishing more widely as Government restrictions ease further in the future.
